Are “spiritual” events supposed to be free?
It’s funny how many people in their faith assume that if there is an activity that has got to do with their faith or church, it ought to be free for the participants. And I can safely say that many singaporean catholics (because i am one and often have this presumption) also feel as though if there is a catholic event going on somewhere, it ought to be free of charge.
Is this presumption wrong? Since God’s word is free for all and since we are called to give, why do the catholic church have to charge for some events or put up an admin fee?
Well, that’s precisely the point i guess - Admin fee.
Whilst we receive the graces from God’s word freely, we would still have to pay for the human facilities that helps in that delivery. Many of us take it for granted that the church ought to pay for everything. Bo’s blog reminded me that i ought not be stingy with my money when it comes to receving more graces and spiritual input. When I recieve, at least i must give back in someway, even though it only goes to defray some of the costs the organisation or church has to bear.
It is such a waste when people throw away opportunities to be enriched just because of a misconception that good events are set up for ‘profit motive’, where in fact they are not.
